1.3 Weather in the desert: What to expect

Las Vegas is located in the Mohave Desert. As far as the weather goes, there is no right or wrong time to go to Las Vegas. The weather is very predictable. As a general rule, it will be sunny and pleasant. March, April and May and September, October and November are especially nice. The best two months weatherwise is Las Vegas are April and October.

The bad news is that the summer months are very hot ...unbearably so during July. The good news is that the hotels still need to fill their rooms and the prices are often deeply discounted ...sometimes by as much as 70%. And you can relax by the pool or catnap throughout the day in your hotel room. Besides, you will be spending most of your time inside anyway.

If you do spend time outside during the hot Las Vegas summer, the Las Vegas tourism office recommends wearing a hat with a 4-inch brim and applying sunscreen with 30 SPF or higher. Confine your walking outside to the nightime hours. The humidity is low in Vegas, producing what people call "a dry heat".  HINT:  The temperature difference between the hot outdoors and a casino is often around 40 degrees.  Many visitors bring a sweater ...even in July!

Monthly Average Temperatures in Farenheit for Las Vegas

The coldest day ever in Las Vegas occurred on Jan. 13, 1963: 8 degrees F. The hottest day was July 19, 2005 when it hit 117 degrees F. The Weather Channel’s website has a very nice Monthly Weather Planner for Las Vegas, NV located here. They also have an advance 10 day Las Vegas weather forecast which is useful as you get closer to your trip.

You can also check the weather for any city in the United States at the National Weather Service's website.

A great way to determine what the weather will be like during your trip to Las Vegas is to access the Wunderground Trip Planner. Simply choose the start date and end date of your trip. The Trip Planner will search its historical database for the weather conditions during those dates over the past 30 years. The results will help you decide how hot, cold, wet, or windy it will be!
